November 2018


During the month of November 2018, the planets Mars and Saturn will be visible in the evening sky. (To see a closer view, click on the image.)

Neither planet is especially bright, but both can be seen with the eyes alone. After sunset, they'll be some of the first "stars" visible. Saturn is slightly fainter than Mars, and will appear low above the southwestern horizon. Mars will be brighter and higher in the sky than Saturn, visible above the southern horizon.

Jupiter is the bright "star" visible after sunset above the southwestern horizon--but note that it will be very low along the horizon; if there are any trees or buildings in the way, you might not see it. Saturn is slightly fainter than Jupiter and will appear above the southern horizon after sunset, and Mars will be brighter than Saturn, appearing in the southeast.

Venus is the extremely bright "star" visible after sunset above the western horizon. Jupiter will appear slightly less bright and above the southwestern horizon after sunset, Saturn is slightly fainter than Jupiter and rising in the southeast after sunset, and Mars will be brighter than Saturn, rising right above the eastern horizon.

Venus is the extremely bright "star" visible after sunset above the western horizon, while Mercury will appear less bright and much closer to the horizon. (Consider yourself very lucky if you're able to spot Mercury--most people can't find it!  Because it will appear so low to the western horizon after sunset, you need a clear view of the horizon, with no trees or buildings in the way.) Jupiter will appear slightly less bright and above the southern horizon after sunset, and Saturn is slightly fainter than Jupiter, rising in the southeast after sunset.

You'll need a clear view of the horizon, so if there are any buildings or trees in the way, you might not see them. After sunset, look for a bright "star" low above the western horizon. That's Venus! The faint star above it, is the planet Mercury.
