February 2019

During the month of February 2019, the planet Mars is the only planet that will be easily visible in the evening sky. (To see a closer view, click on the image.)

After sunset, look for the first "star" to appear above the southern horizon. That's Mars! However, if you have a clear, unobstructed view of the western horizon--in other words, if there are no trees or buildings in the way--then right after sunset, you might be able to notice the planet Mercury. It will appear as the bright star that's just barely above the horizon.
